Do it yourself bike check: Here's how!

  • by

Spring is just around the corner, the days are getting longer and the desire for long bike rides is increasing! But before you set off, you should give your bike a thorough check. Winter may have left its mark, and a well-maintained bike is not only more pleasant to ride, but also safer.

The best part: You can do a lot of the work yourself! This saves you money on expensive workshop visits and helps you get to know your bike even better. With a few simple steps, your bike is ready for the new season!

Here are the most important things you should check:

1. Pump up & check the tyres

Many tyres have lost pressure after the winter. Please check the tyre pressure (you can usually find the information on the side of the tyre) and inflate them. Also check whether the tread is still good or whether cracks are visible in the rubber. If so, it's time for new tyres!

2. Check the brakes

Take a look to see whether your brake pads still have enough material or whether you may already need to replace them. It's also a good idea to test whether the brakes grip evenly and adjust them if necessary. With hydraulic brakes, it is also important to bleed them from time to time so that they brake properly.
A functioning brake is essential for your safety - and adjusting it is not that difficult once you know how!

3. Clean & oil the chain

A dry or rusty chain makes pedalling harder and wears out more quickly. You can easily get to grips with this with a cloth and some chain cleaner. And if you add a little chain oil, your chain will run like clockwork! The best thing about it: with the right technique, you'll be done in just a few minutes.

4. Check & adjust the gear shift

Is the chain not shifting smoothly into the next gear or is it making noises? Then the gears could be out of adjustment. With the right adjustment, pedalling becomes child's play. You'll see that it's not as complicated as it looks, and with a little practice, you can quickly solve the problem yourself.

5. Check lights & reflectors

Even though the days are getting longer, it is important that your lighting works well. Take a look at your front and rear lights and reflectors, especially if you are out and about in the evening or in bad weather. It is often enough to change the batteries or clean the contacts.
